The 21st century is a very competitive ones for people searching for jobs, so much so that the skills required to get a job goes beyond the bullet points on your resume. Some little workplace habits and attitudes count for more than you think.

As a matter of fact, everything you do at work is a skill. Not just the abilities that show up in progress reports or HR files. How you talk to people, remembering a coworker’s birthday, your ability to fix paper jams in the printer and solve problems between colleagues is a skill.

While all these seems insignificant, the truth is small skills have the tendency to add up to big careers.

A lot of people ignore these skills and allow them to turn into weaknesses over time. Regardless whether you just entered the workforce or if you’ve been working for 15 years and have developed some bad habits, there is a need for you to bring your invisible skills to the fore.

Go To Work
This is perhaps the biggest reasons people lose their jobs. While everyone can show up for work, someone just isn’t. Someone is taking too many dishonest sick days. Someone is coming in late. Someone is abusing the vacation policy.

Try not to be that someone. Avoid going to work late and show up on time. That is basically the basis of everything.

Play To Your Strenghts
Avoid scheduling meetings that require high creativity late in the afternoons. People are creatively empty late in the day and their ideas will be too.

Be Flexible
Avoid constantly complaining about the work conditions. It’s too stressful, my seat are uncomfortable, it’s too dark are things you should avoid saying. One simple rule you should follow is to remember that that “unless there is a reason to panic, everything will be alright.”

Add Value To Your Organisation
If you’ve never asked yourself, “Am I adding value?” start with an easier question: “What is that thing my company requires of me?” Then consider, every day, how you add value to the company.

If you are unsure, you can ask your boss about the best ways for you to add value to your company. Employees who add value end up being invaluable.

Have A Positive Attitude
A lot of people that lose their jobs is usually as a result of their attitude. Having a sense of entitlement or a mindset that you are doing the company a favour by giving them your presence may result in you losing your job.

The truth is you are responsible for your attitude not your company. Attitude is a decision, you have to make every day. The best way to assess your attitude is to ask a friend—not one who has the worst attitude about their own job.

Find the one who’s honest enough to say hard things. When they give you advice, be humble enough to actually take it. If you want a better job, start with a better attitude. If you want a new job, start with a new attitude.

Exceed Expectations
Completing the work your boss thought would take you 40 hours in only 25 hours doesn’t mean you’ve earned an extra 15 hours of me time that week. It only means you work smarter and you’re ready to take on challenges. This is one of the job skills every young person should have.

Be Diplomatic
avoid engaging in useless and unneeded power struggles in your workplace. This will prevent unnecessary rancour and help you reach the pinnacle of your career.
